HISTORY OF COTEAU DES PRAIRIES HOSPITAL & CLINIC

Coteau des Prairies Hospital (CDP) was incorporated and received its charter on the 17th day of September, 1963. A nineteen member Board of Directors with four officers was responsible for the fundraising, planning, and building project, which was completed in the summer of 1967. The open house, which was sponsored by the Auxiliary, was July 30, 1967, and the hospital opened August 15, 1967.

The first Board of Directors included R. B. Swanberg (President), James Dady (Vice-President), Joe Schuch (Secretary), Kenneth Erdahl (Treasurer), Jack Adams, Wally Brantseg, Allan Ellsworth, Amos Hull, Art Johnson, Dale Kempton, John Landsberger, Bill McCleerey, Ewald Medenwald, Art Pederson, Art Sather, Gene Sebek, Harold Torness, Kenneth Vig, and Bill Welk.

The completion of the hospital was made possible by donations from hundreds of people and also a federal grant from the Hill-Burton program. The $650,000 hospital opened debt free in 1967 because of the donations received and the Hill-Burton grant. The Hill-Burton grant obligation has been fully paid back through the giving of charity care to patients. The Roberts County Community Hospital also transferred its entire operation and assets to Coteau des Prairies Hospital when the building project was completed. The clinic $150,000 building and dentist office was completed in 1972. The Browns Valley Clinic was purchased in 1991.  In 2000, a $400,000 clinic expansion and remodeling project was completed.
